SASS
Poly 2 Function Thermal
Duration Contest
August 12, 2000
by Bob Brewer
The day started at 8:00 for equipment set-up and Zen meditation while we debated on the prevailing wind direction-(five flyers six opinions). Eventually it was decided to launch to the North which proved to be correct even though the breeze was erratic which resulted in some entertaining landings both on and off the field.Watching pilots facial and body spasms during final would make a great video show during Winter meetings and an excellent opportunity for further humiliation which we all value when it is at someone elses` expense.
With Pete Hinze`s expert assistance on the retriever we were able to fly two 2 hour rounds with 3 and 5 minute tasks and the calibrated landing tapes. This made for a relaxing day with plenty of time to enjoy the sun and concentrate on familiarizing novice flyers with contest activity.
RESULTS (We all flew 2 Meter Sportsman):
First - Paul Measel
5203
Second - David Anstead 4962
Third - Charlie Baumgartner 4805
Novice First - Tor Burkhard 4098
Second - John Frost 3014
John and Tor caught on rapidly and had a good time, which should encourage more novice participation. You can be matched up with a more experienced timer to show you the ropes and provide someone to blame for rough landings.
Anyone interested in adding another Poly/RE contest this Fall contact Bob Brewer and we will make it happen.
NOTE: There would be no contests without the generous time taken by
Dick Mcdonald and Pete Hinze to organize equipment and charge batteries. These guys and any
others I have not mentioned deserve a BIG TROPHY.
