A small, but competitive group of pilots turned out for the June, Poly Contest under partly cloudy skies. As usual, we got under way about Ten O’clock after having a long discussion of which way to setup the winch for launching. It was decided that we would launch to the south along the east edge of the mowed field. The wind direction was cooperative, but the windy conditions and massive sink between thermals made for a challenging day of flying. The thermals that were around were weak and drifted quickly downwind in the steady breezes from the southwest.

Back to flying, we flew four rounds for the day. The Novices flew four, five-minute tasks. We challenged everyone else to fly a five, two-sevens, and a ten-minute task in any order. Challenge was the operative word for the day given the wind conditions. Numerous flights failed to reach the intended task time. Seth Arlow had to use two sailplanes to complete the contest after an unfortunate crash damaged his Kestrel. Dick Barker tested the ultimate strength of his 2M Uplink as a gust of wind combined with his hard launch to fold the wings and officially score the shortest flight of the day -- back to the drawing board.
