| SASS/NWSS TD Contest Results July 21-22, 2001 by Russ Young Well, Seattle finally had great weather for a 2-day TD contest. Saturday at 10:00am we launched into the light south winds, Sunday at 9:30 am we launched into the almost non-existent North Winds. Thermals were there to be found all weekend, and several pilots got all their times both days. The CD taskmasters drove the 17 Seattle pilots and 2 Canadian pilots to the winches with short round windows, 7 rounds each day, and a pre-defined set of tasks. Tasks Saturday were 3, 5, 7, 10, 3, 5, 10 with line landings. Sunday we flew 3, 5, 7, 10, 3, 5, 7 with spot landings. We would have liked to have seen more out-of-towners, but we certainly understand with the grueling contest schedule not everyone can make every contest! Some of the highlights: Seeing Doug Buchanan circling the Super V for many minutes under 100 feet; Derek Houseworth sharing his plane with his competitor Jay Allison all day Sunday after Jay suffered a slight (shall we say) wing folding incident on Saturday; Tor Burkhard making some "real" spot landings under the forceful tutelage and hounding of Dave Beardsley; David Anstead beating his dad with his dad's own plane. I'm sure there were highlights that I missed, but it seemed everyone had a great time. Thanks to all those that helped with the non-flying part of the contest - setup, takedown, etc. ..see you all in Seattle for the Dennis Otter Memorial contest August 25, 26. RES - Novice |
