SASS Thermal Duration Contest -- May 26, 2001
by Waid Reynolds

Perseverance pays off at last -- we finally hit the right weekend for a TD contest! After seeing the beautiful blue cloudless sky on the morning of May 26th we were pinching ourselves and checking the calendar to be sure we were at the field on the right day. As good fortune would have it, this was not an HLG contest date, and it was indeed the scheduled date for our May TD contest. The last time we saw such a perfect flying day for a TD contest was 2 years ago at the May 1999 event!

The warm sun and good thermals drew a crowd the likes of which have not be seen at 60 Acres in many years with 25 pilots registering to fly. It was a real pleasure to welcome such a great crowd to one of our club contests.

The contest could not have turned out better. The Sun was warm, the soaring was excellent, the crowd was congenial, and equipment problems were few.

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone who helped out, especially Pete Hinze.

The final standings after 5 rounds follow…
